Cleaning beer stone buildup

Postby jeffjm » Fri Jul 18, 2014 9:34 am

Does anyone have any methods of removing beer stone from stainless steel that they like? A couple of my thermowells are starting to get kind of cruddy. I tried mixing some beer line cleaner and water according to the instructions on the label and soaking them for a day or two, but that didn't do much.
I set out running but I take my time.

I have always had luck with Powdered Brewers Wash (PBW).
Let it soak and it does the work for you.

If the build-up is beer stone (calcium oxalate) then a dilute phosphoric acid or citric acid solution or another dilute acid solution should be effective in dissolving the build-up. Star San is phosphoric acid based and would work too. You won't need much. Let us know what you found to work to remove your build-up.

I soaked one in hot PBW for 2-3 hours. Wiping down with a soft cloth didn't remove the buildup, but a nylon scrubby turned it shiny and new-looking.
