There's a really cool artcle in this months Saveur on cider and the return of traditional cider apple varieties. It says prohibition killed off US cider production and the growers all switched to the sweet varities in order survive. Beer, wine, and spirits came back with a vengeance, but the cider makers never recovered. Those apple varities were many times bitter, tannic, earthy, etc..not what you'd pick or buy to eat. But the made wonderfly complex cider. The article talks about Greg Hall, formally of goose island, and his quest to bring back unique cider. Anyways, neat article.
I havent actually sourced apples or juice for cider...unless schnucks counts. Yeah i suck.
